Tomato Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ red wine
  • 4 cups plum tomatoes, seeded & crushed
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 2-3 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp salt & ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp. fresh basil or 1 tsp dried
  • 1 tbsp. fresh marjoram or 1 tsp. dried
  • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley

Steps

  1. In large Dutch oven, sauté onion, mushrooms, & garlic in oil.
  2. Add wine & Worcestershire.
  3. Add tomatoes, paste, sugar, salt & pepper.
  4. Simmer for at least 1 hours, uncovered till sauce is thick.
  5. Add herbs & simmer for 20-30 min. longer.
  6. Serve over pasta.
